Bay Area Digitalists highlights digital artists whose work is inspired by the deep history and culture of technology in the Bay Area.

From the hand-built computers of the Homebrew Computer Club that eventually launched Apple Computers, to the personal ads and resource-sharing of Craigslist, to the pink mustachioed ride-share of Lyft, the SF/Bay Area has been an incubator for creative uses of technology.

Within new media art, the Bay Area Digitalist’s work embodies the particular characteristics of Bay Area tech: entrepreneurship, experimentation, invention, access, and a DIY sensibility. Based in the Bay Area, artists included employ a variety of tools and outputs to explore the very nature of the technologies used and their impact on society, interaction, and daily life.

Bay Area Digitalists is on view at Root Division, 1131 Mission Street, San Francisco, November 4 – December5, 2015. Reception Saturday, November 14, 7–10pm.
